Vestara's solution to pharmaceutical waste management standardizes what is today a confusing array of laws and regulations, and outdated listings of hazardous pharmaceuticals. By simplifying the process, EcoRex eliminates the guesswork and subjectivity inherent in pharmaceutical waste disposal.
The EcoRex Pharmaceutical Waste Management System accesses a proprietary database of all 140,000 plus National Drug Code (NDC) products to conveniently and accurately enable hospital personnel to dispose of residual drugs, empty containers, and each hospital's unique admixture, in accordance with federal and state laws and in the most cost-effective method of pharmaceutical waste disposal.

Proper waste disposal
EcoRex utilizes a barcode scanner and a touch screen to properly classify waste as:
- Infectious
- Chemo
- Hazardous
- Mixed Hazardous/Infectious
- Lower risk
EcoRex identifies the type of pharmaceutical waste and opens the appropriate waste stream tamper-proof container automatically, without having hospital personnel look up pharmaceutical waste codes or regulations. After disposal, the waste stream receptacle is immediately returned to a locked state.
Waste stream receptacles remain closed and secure until a user scans a bar code. With a safer disposal system like EcoRex, needle stick injuries are reduced. Regulatory compliance is assured since only the appropriate waste stream receptacle will open after EcoRex has identified the drug and type of waste.
Designed for flexibility
Each container in the EcoRex station includes an automated level detector for convenient and timely removal. The containers are designed with a superior exclusionary feature so that accessing the container with hands and fingers is almost impossible. Further, a level sensor signals EVS when containers are full.
Each EcoRex station is modular and configured to the needs of the facility. The specific configuration is based on the required number and type of waste streams and capacity of each type of waste for that area of the hospital. Two collection stations are available: a cart-based system for maximum portability, and a wall-based system that can be placed close to the point of care.
Simple, quick, and convenient
EcoRex answers the critical need for an automated pharmaceutical waste management system that accurately identifies all types of bar-coded drug waste, including empty containers, then sorts it into regulatory-compliant waste stream bins for disposal.
Scan it
- Safe disposal of vials, ampoules, syringes, IV bags up to one liter, 500cc glass bottles, and other drug dispensing products.
- User-friendly interface and built-in barcode scanner display screen prompts.
Dispose it
- Accurate classification of waste as infectious, chemo, hazardous, mixed hazardous/infectious, lower risk, or sewerable.
- Convenient immediate disposal into waste stream bins that open automatically.
Close it
- Exclusionary bin feature prohibits user tampering once closed.
- Timely EVS removal of bin contents through level sensor that triggers automatic message alerts.
